The Historic Art Library (formerly held at the Scottish National Gallery) covers art from the early 14th century to early 20th century, reflecting the Scottish National Gallery's art collection.

This library holds approximately 50,000 volumes of monographs, catalogues raisonnés, exhibition and sales catalogues, public and private collection catalogues, journals, photographs, slides, board minutes, as well as files for the artworks in the permanent collection.

The Scottish National Gallery Library’s journal collection is included in the SUNCAT online catalogue.

Due to the Celebrating Scotland’s Art project the historical research library is currently in storage and will be made available by appointment.

 

 

Book a visit

First-time visitors will be asked to show some form of ID such as a passport or driver's licence.
There is wheelchair access to the library via a lift. 

Groups of up to 10 are welcome to visit the library.
Group visits should be pre-booked at least four weeks in advance.
