Extensively illustrated paperback produced to accompany the exhibition Witches & Wicked Bodies shown at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 2013.

This book provides an innovative, rich survey of images of European witchcraft, from the sixteenth century to the present day. It focuses on the representation of women and the enduring stereotypes they embody, ranging from hideous old crones to beautiful young seductresses. Such imagery has ancient precedents and has been repeatedly re-invented by artists over the centuries.

Petherbridge introduces this fascinating subject and includes insightful catalogue entries on each of the exhibited works; the works primarily feature drawings and prints as well as a group of important paintings, all from British collections. A wide range of artists are represented including Dürer, Cranach, Goya, Fuseli, Blake, Burra, Sherman and Rego.

Deanna Petherbridge is an artist, writer and curator. She curated the touring exhibition The Quick and the Dead: Artists and Anatomy in 1997 and is the author of The Primacy of Drawing: Histories and Theories of Practice, Yale University Press, 2010.  She was Professor of Drawing at the Royal College of Art, London from 1995 to 2001.
