Over

About this artwork

Over engages with ideas about perception, and how we look at and experience art and phenomenon found in the world around us. Its repeated motif of black and white curvilinear lines produces complex optical sensations. Writing about the work in 1979, the artist commented that, ‘The theme of the painting Over is a certain sensation of change: moving from one state to another, a transition enacted through the progression of the elements employed. Something crosses 'over', turns 'over'.  This is a persistent principle of my work which appears almost involuntarily in different guises at different times.’
