About this artwork

Born in Haddington, East Lothian, Gillies studied at Edinburgh College of Art and then in Paris. He admired the work of French artists such as Bonnard, Vuillard, Matisse and Braque. Flowers on a Sideboard shows the influence of Matisse in the bold colour and rhythmic design. Gillies taught at Edinburgh College of Art from 1925 to 1966, exercising an important influence over Scottish painting.
