About this artwork
The sitter's husband was twice Lord Provost of Edinburgh. His portrait, the companion to this and painted at the same time, belongs to Edinburgh City Art Gallery and shows Stuart at a writing table holding a book and a letter. Mosman was a native of Aberdeen, where he taught drawing, geometry, perspective and architecture at the Kings' and Marischal Colleges.

William Mosman
Mosman was probably born in Aberdeen and became a pupil of Francesco Imperiali in Rome in 1732. He spent about six years in Italy but he visited Aberdeen in 1738 and painted several portraits of the Duff family. He returned permanently to Scotland in 1740. In the early 1750s Mosman moved north,...
