About this artwork

A naval officer from Perthshire, Adam Duncan's career had been worthy but unremarkable until his last posting, when he emerged as one of Britain's heroes of the French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802). Duncan's victory over the Dutch fleet at the Battle of Camperdown in 1797 was crucial in Britain's struggle against the French who were allied with the Dutch after the Dutch Republic was invaded by French forces in 1795. This print, produced the year after the battle, would have been engraved to commemorate his success and his standing as one of Britain’s great naval heroes.
