Fantasy and Function | Design for Goldsmiths

3rd May to 3rd August 2008 | National Gallery of Scotland | Free

This display from the Department of Prints and Drawings will feature around thirty intricately engraved designs for jewellery, tableware and ornaments.

These spectacular designs, ranging from tiny grotesque fantasies from sixteenth-century France to dazzling commemorative tablewear from the nineteenth century, were produced by highly skilled engravers and provided both inspiration and instruction for gold and silversmiths. They reveal not only the skill and virtuosity of printmakers, but also the ambition and ingenuity of the craftsmen working in the applied arts.
