'En Plein Soleil': Whistler in Scotland
James McNeill Whistler, the expatriate American artist, aroused strong emotions in Britain. A close friend of Fantin-Latour and Monet, he studied in Paris and later lived both in Paris and London, forging links between Pre-Raphaelites, Realists, Impressionists and Symbolists. In Scotland, opinions of his work varied radically. Artists like Guthrie and Walton admired him, but others wished to counteract the influence of Whistler and of the 'Glasgow Impressionists'. Yet Whistler enjoyed the support of an important group Scottish artists, dealers and collectors including Alexander Reid, J.J. Cowan and William Burrell. Margaret Macdonald, Professor of Art History, Director of the Whistler Etching Project, discusses some of Whistler's most important works, and their relationship to Scottish art.

Talks & Lectures
Tracey Emin: cat and mice
Tracey Emin is past mistress at drawing on forms and expressions usually considered beyond the pale - femininity, cuteness, bathos, sentimentality. Her cat, Docket, watches over whatever she is getting up to in bed. She offers us a family of meercats as a suitable icon to sit on a plinth in Trafalgar Square. Birds twitter in branches. Like the pied piper of Hamlyn, she draws us willy nilly into her work, yet turns the tables on us as we realise that while she is the one who reveals all, it is we who are left feeling exposed. A talk by Andrea Rose, Director of Visual Arts, British Council.
